Emma D’Arcy said there was only one scene they dreaded shooting this season, and it was the moment Rhaenyra confronted Jace’s corpse after his death in Season 3, Episode 2 of House of the Dragon. D’Arcy said Rhaenyra’s first reaction was denial, the kind that tries to push away a fact that cannot be pushed away.
That is the reason Emma D’Arcy is being searched now: the episode puts Jace Targaryen’s death at the center of the story, and D’Arcy’s comments turn a brutal scene into a clearer read on where Rhaenyra is headed. Jace dies in the Battle of the Gullet, and Rhaenyra, as both his mother and his queen, is left trying to make sense of an insurmountable loss that D’Arcy said felt too terrible to reckon with.
D’Arcy described the day as a hard one at work, but also one shaped by the people around them. Harry Collett gave them room in the morning, then checked in over lunch with an offer of space or help, a small gesture that D’Arcy called beautiful. Matt Smith was not part of that scene, but he remains one of the co-stars moving through the same season’s fallout.
The episode does not stop at grief. It opens with the aftermath of the Battle of the Gullet and ends with Alicent coming before Rhaenyra seated on the Iron Throne, while Rhaenyra looks down at Otto Hightower’s beheaded body. Daemon and Rhaenyra take over the Red Keep, and the change in power puts the political stakes on top of the personal ones. Rhaenyra is mortified at the thought of having to explain any of it to Alicent, because Alicent had earlier set her up to take King’s Landing and the Iron Throne from Aegon.
That is where the uneasy truce between Rhaenyra and Alicent starts to crack. The pair struck a tentative alliance at the end of Season 2, but D’Arcy said Rhaenyra still sees Alicent as her judge and jury, no matter how far apart they have drifted. Whether that alliance survives now depends on what Alicent does when she is faced with the woman on the throne and the body below it.
