President Donald Trump said the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool in Washington is probably going to be drained again, as chunks of blue paint peel from the bottom only two weeks after multi-million dollar renovations were finished.
The pool has already been refilled with water and is now being cleaned to remove algae, a quick turn for one of the US capital's best-known landmarks. The repair work was supposed to leave the site in better shape, but the visible damage has turned it into a public talking point almost as soon as the renovations ended.
Verify's Jake Horton explained how the Reflecting Pool became a global talking point, and the reason is easy to see: the problems appeared fast, and they are easy to photograph. Blue paint on the bottom is peeling away where visitors expect to see a clean, polished surface, which makes the timing of the repairs part of the story as much as the repairs themselves.
