Gracie The Giraffe escaped from a ranch in Texas in mid-June and was still missing as an intensive search by helicopters and drones continued across Texas Hill Country. A $5,000 reward was being offered for information that leads to the reticulated giraffe.
The search matters because Gracie did not wander out of a petting zoo or a roadside enclosure. She came from Cedar Hollow Ranch in Leakey, an exotic animal breeding operation about 100 miles west of San Antonio that keeps animals far from the ecosystems where they evolved. The ranch breeds giraffes and other ungulates native to Africa and Asia, and it has sold giraffes to people who enjoy having wildlife as well as to zoos.
Vick Jones, who is associated with the ranch, said it breeds giraffes to sell to people who “enjoy having wildlife.” That description sits uneasily beside the online tone around the escape, which has at times treated the missing giraffe like a curiosity. For the people looking from the air and on the ground, it is something else: a large animal that should not be left loose in the Texas Hill Country, and one whose absence has put a spotlight on the scale of the state’s exotic-animal business.
Texas has about 5,000 ranches or large landholders with exotic animals, along with some 500 ranches open to the public to hunt them and roughly 2,500 additional private ranches where some exotic hunting is done. Those animals total more than two million across 135 species and are valued at $1.5 billion annually. Gracie’s escape turned that larger industry into a very immediate question: whether a giraffe can be recovered quickly once she has slipped out of a breeding operation built around animals that are not native to Texas.
For now, the only confirmed next step is the one already underway. Helicopters and drones are still searching, and the reward remains on the table. Until Gracie is found, the story is less about how she got loose than about how hard it can be to bring a giraffe back once a Texas ranch has lost sight of her.
