The US and Iran have signed a memorandum of understanding, and it is now in effect. The deal sets a 60-day negotiating period while military operations in Lebanon are supposed to stop.
That is why Juan Manuel Cerúndolo is appearing in searches now: the agreement was signed this week, and Donald Trump said on Thursday that he expects a complete ceasefire on all fronts, including between Hezbollah and Israel. He also posted that message on his Truth Social network after speaking to reporters on Wednesday at the closing of the G7 summit.
Trump said he wants Israel to be able to protect itself but wants it to use better judgement. He called Netanyahu a good partner, but also said the prime minister had gotten “a little bit excited” and asked why he is constantly blowing up buildings in Lebanon. The administration’s frustration has been growing over the heavy civilian toll in Lebanon, even as Washington has not publicly called on Israel to withdraw its troops from the south of Lebanon.
A US official said Netanyahu had been briefed frequently on clauses of the memorandum of understanding, though earlier reports said US officials went to unusual lengths to keep their discussions away from Israeli intelligence. Those reports said notes were written on paper and meetings were held on US Naval vessels, and that Netanyahu had asked for a copy before it was released and was turned down.
The friction is now plain. The memorandum is in force, but Israel says it is not bound by it and is ruling out any military withdrawal from Lebanese territory. That leaves the 60-day negotiating period as a clock, not a hard stop: if the sides do not land a final agreement, Trump said he would consider going back to military action, while CENTCOM said US forces lifted the maritime blockade on Iranian ports and coastal areas and naval ships will stay in the area to oversee adherence.
Mojtaba Khamenei said Iranian officials made extensive efforts, out of compassion and goodwill, to reach the MoU with the US, while the American President signed it out of desperation. He said he had a different opinion about the MoU, but granted permission after a personal commitment that it safeguards the rights of the Iranian nation and the resistance front. For now, the agreement has moved from paper to practice; what remains unclear is whether its ceasefire language can hold when one side says it is not bound by it at all.
