Rip Wheeler’s old job at Dutton Ranch is no longer the work of one man. The enforcer and ranch foreman role has been split between JR Villarreal’s Azul and Hart Denton’s Chet, giving each character a different piece of the responsibility Cole Hauser’s Rip once carried alone.
That matters now because Dutton Ranch is already drawing a big audience on Paramount+, and viewers are watching how the spin-off reshapes one of its most recognizable parts. The series became the biggest original launch in Paramount+ history when it debuted, then reached 12.9 million global views in the seven days after its premiere, and Paramount also reported it was the number one streaming series by average audience for the week of 11 May, according to Nielsen.
The split is not a simple handoff. Azul is being steered toward the more traditional ranch-hand side of the job, while Chet is moving closer to the enforcer work. That means the old Rip Wheeler model is being divided by function: one character handles the day-to-day running of the ranch alongside Marc Menchaca’s Zachariah, while the other is described as the one more likely to cross lines and lean into the darker side of ranch life. Zachariah brings a hardened past and experience in morally murky situations, which gives Azul’s side of the operation a partner who understands pressure from the inside.
That division changes the shape of the show’s power structure. Instead of replacing Rip with a single successor, Dutton Ranch is building two separate tracks where one used to be. It also sits inside a wider story about Rip and Kelly Reilly’s Beth Dutton trying to build a future together while colliding with brutal new realities, as a ruthless rival ranch pushes to protect its empire.
Dutton Ranch airs on Paramount+ on Fridays, so the next episode will be the place where this split stops being a casting note and starts becoming the way the ranch actually works. The question now is not who replaces Rip Wheeler, but how long the show can keep Azul and Chet balanced before one side of the job becomes the more important one.
