Valve is working with AMD to bring FSR 4 to the Steam Machine, and Pierre-Loup Griffais said the upgrade is coming soon. The company would not give a date, leaving owners of the $1,049 console waiting for the next step in a software change that could improve how games look on the 512GB model.
That matters now because the Steam Machine still uses an earlier version of AMD FSR, while Valve has said FSR 4 should offer a significant improvement in upscaling graphical quality. FSR 4 also adds AI-assisted frame generation and other enhancements that improve how compatible games look in motion, which is part of why the new version is being watched so closely.
The timing is also being read against the way the device is being judged. The Steam Machine is described as about as powerful as a PS5, and in some games the PS5 and PS5 Pro render a clearer image in motion. For a machine built around AMD FSR, that comparison makes the next software update more than a routine patch. It is part of how the device will be measured.
Griffais told The Verge that Valve is working with AMD on the update, but he also said it can’t say more about timing. That leaves the promise intact and the schedule blank. It is a familiar split in hardware software news: the upgrade is real enough to announce, but not ready enough to date.
There is another reason the announcement landed with extra weight. The last reported likelihood of AMD bringing FSR 4 to devices with RDNA3 integrated GPUs had been described as a little bleak, so any sign that the work is moving ahead stands out. For Steam Machine owners, the question is no longer whether Valve wants the upgrade. It is when the software that could lift image quality will finally reach the machine they already have.
The answer still sits inside that gap. Valve says FSR 4 is coming soon. It has not said when.
