Valve's Steam Machine is on review benches now, and the first verdict is straightforward: this tiny, virtually silent mini-PC can trade blows with Xbox Series X and PlayStation 5 class hardware, but it starts at $1049 for the basic 512GB model. At the top end, the 2TB version bundled with a Steam Controller reaches $1428, a price that will define how buyers judge everything else about it.
That matters today because this is the first hands-on look at what Valve is asking people to pay for a compact SteamOS box that is built more like a premium living-room PC than a budget game console. The review period lasted just under a couple of weeks, long enough to show that the machine is not a stripped-down curiosity. It is a carefully finished device with red fabric and solid walnut faceplates on the 2TB model, and the design leaves an impression before the numbers do.
The cost begins to make more sense when the hardware is laid out. Valve says Steam Machine uses a semi-custom CPU and a semi-custom GPU, and the CPU is described as a Hawk Point 2 chip with six cores, 12 threads, a top speed of 4.8GHz and a 30W TDP. Two of those cores are full-fat Zen 4, while the other four are lower-clocked Zen 4c cores. That hybrid layout helps explain why the machine can stay small and quiet, but it also shows why Valve is not pricing it like a generic mini-PC.
Valve has also built in upgrade flexibility that most console buyers do not get. Storage can be swapped through M.2 slots in both 2230 and 2280 form factors, and microSD cards used in other SteamOS devices can be hot-swapped as well. The machine also uses replaceable faceplates held on by four magnets, with third parties expected to make their own. Those details matter because they make Steam Machine feel less like a sealed box and more like a small PC that happens to live under a television.
Still, the premium presentation comes with a catch that will not be easy to ignore. The official spec lists HDMI 2.0, yet HDMI 2.1 features such as HDR and AMD FreeSync are active in practice. That mismatch suggests the listed spec is narrower than the machine's actual behavior, but it also adds to the sense that Valve is shipping a device whose capabilities are better than the tidy line items on the page.
Memory choices raise a similar question. The original 2x 8GB SODIMM DDR5 arrangement has been replaced by a single 16GB module running at 5600MT/s, and less memory bandwidth can hurt performance in CPU-limited scenarios. In testing a Ryzen 5 8500G with 5200MT/s DDR5, the writer saw roughly a 15 to 25 percent CPU gain in Crimson Desert's Bug Hill area when moving from single-channel to dual-channel memory. That kind of result is a reminder that small hardware decisions can matter when the machine is asked to do more than its case size suggests.
Valve has already delayed Steam Machine because of the current component crisis, and the pricing now lands after that wait rather than before it. SteamOS is also meant to work on a range of hardware, and Valve points out that users are not limited to buying this box if the numbers do not work for them; they can build their own PC instead. That makes Steam Machine less of a must-have device than a reference point: a polished, high-end option that shows what Valve thinks a compact SteamOS machine should be, even if the starting price keeps it out of reach for many buyers.
