Chipotle App and website hit degraded performance on Father's Day

Chipotle's app and website suffered degraded performance on Father's Day, June 21, 2026, and customers trying to place digital orders ran into login failures, payment errors and messages telling them, "Something's not right, try again later."

The disruption mattered because it hit during a Rewards member promotion that was still active and still pulling people into the Chipotle app. Between June 15 through June 21, members could claim a free Cilantro Lime Sauce side or topping with any entrée purchase, and the offer could be redeemed through the app or the website.

Entireweb logged 14 user error reports within a single hour on Sunday evening, including 13 in the preceding 20 minutes alone, a burst that fits the kind of dinner-rush pressure that can overwhelm even a system built to scale. Chipotle has said 98% of its digital workloads sit on Microsoft Azure, and its Smarter Pickup Times system is designed to throttle incoming orders and estimate wait times based on real-time restaurant load, but that did not stop the platform from buckling under promotion-driven traffic.

The company has seen this kind of failure before. In March 2024, thousands of users were unable to log into the Chipotle app or redeem rewards during a national promotion, and that outage lasted nearly four hours. This time, users reported chipotle.com showing an offline page as the holiday rush built, leaving no clear answer on whether the problem came from the cloud setup, the promotion traffic, or the company’s own rate-limiting controls.

What is clear is that the failure landed at one of the busiest restaurant periods of the year, when digital orders matter most and loyalty promotions can push demand past the point the system was built to absorb.
