Samsung’s next smartwatch cycle may finally give the Galaxy Watch Ultra a new look. Mihai Matei said the company has a new lineup in the works for 2026, and the Ultra model may be the one that breaks from two generations that looked almost the same.
That is why the Samsung Galaxy Watch Ultra 2 is getting attention now. Samsung is expected to show a new Galaxy Watch trio at Unpacked this summer, and the timing matters because buyers looking at the lineup will be weighing a familiar design against the possibility of a meaningful reset.
Matei also said Samsung could refresh the Cushion Design on the base and Classic models while leaving the Ultra to do the heavier lifting on visual change. In his view, the 2025 watches are still basically squircles, with circular displays sitting on top of squarer bodies. That shape has already become the company’s shorthand, but it has also made the lineup feel more iterative than new.
The software side may change some of that pressure. One UI 8 Watch is Samsung’s latest Wear OS skin, and the Galaxy Watch 8 lineup introduced the Cushion Design language across the range. That gave Samsung a cleaner design direction, but it also raised the bar for what comes next. If the base and Classic models only get a light refresh, the Ultra becomes the obvious place to show a more visible shift.
That shift matters to people who have been waiting for a reason to move on. Matei said he has not upgraded his Galaxy Watch 5 since buying it in 2023, which is a small but telling sign of how much the current look has blended into the background. When a product line stops feeling new, even a modest redesign can decide whether a buyer stays put or starts paying attention again.
The unresolved question is not whether Samsung has a smartwatch update coming. It is how far Samsung is willing to go on the Ultra when the rest of the lineup may only be tuned rather than transformed. If the company wants the next Galaxy Watch generation to feel like more than a software refresh with the same body, that model is where it has to prove it.
