This month’s schedule also shows why the payment calendar is not the same for everyone. Some recipients who began receiving benefits before May 1997 were paid on June 3, and people who receive both SSI and Social Security were also paid that day. Separate SSI payments went out on June 1. That means two people can rely on the same program and still see money arrive on very different days, depending on when they started benefits or which payments they receive.
The staggered setup has been in place since 1997, when the Social Security Administration moved away from the old system of paying everyone on the third day of each month. Most beneficiaries who began receiving benefits after May 1, 1997, are assigned dates tied to birth dates, a method meant to spread work across the month for the agency and the banking system alike. The largest monthly benefit mentioned for the program is $5,181, available to people who earned at or above the taxable maximum for much of their careers and waited until age 70 to claim.
The next test for beneficiaries is straightforward: June 24 is the final major payment wave now on the calendar, and anyone who misses the expected date is told to allow three mailing days before contacting the Social Security Administration.
