Google says it will fix an Android 17 bug that has wiped homescreen widgets from some Pixel owners’ devices and, in some cases, left the widgets missing from the widget picker as well. The company said the problem is tied to Work Profile and will be addressed in a software update soon.
The timing matters because the stable Android 17 update arrived earlier this week, and people on Reddit quickly began reporting that widgets they already had in place were gone. Ben Schoon relayed Google’s confirmation that the company knows about the bug and expects to push a fix in a future update.
The reports are not new. Complaints about widgets disappearing and not coming back through the picker were already appearing in February, during the Android 17 Beta program, which suggests the issue made it from testing into the broader release. That is a rough landing for a feature that has long been one of the most useful parts of the Android homescreen.
Google’s own explanation also points to a narrow but frustrating failure mode. The company said the bug affects Work Profile users, and some temporary workarounds have helped certain people get widgets back. Disabling the Work Profile brought widgets back for some affected users, while adding a new profile could make the problem return. Other users found partial relief by disabling or archiving affected apps before restoring them, and toggling focus mode also seemed to work for a time.
That is the catch: these fixes can make the homescreen look normal again, but Google is still treating the issue as a bug that needs a proper software update. The company did not give a date, only a promise that the fix will roll out soon, leaving affected users waiting on the next patch rather than a permanent workaround.
