Judith Sheldon and her husband, Wylie Sheldon, were found dead Monday in a parked, still-running Jeep Compass on Interstate 5 north of Redding, California, after failing to meet friends at the Oregon Shakespeare Festival. The California Highway Patrol found the couple at 5:46 p.m. with Judith Sheldon in the driver seat and Wylie Sheldon on the passenger side.
For a San Francisco arts circle that knew the Sheldons for years, the news landed as a shock. Judith Sheldon was 84 and Wylie Sheldon was 86. She chaired the board of the San Francisco Silent Film Festival, and the couple were patrons of San Francisco Opera and San Francisco Performances. They had been traveling to Ashland, Oregon, when they were discovered.
The details so far point to a roadside death scene that investigators do not believe involved foul play. The Shasta County Sheriff’s Office said extreme heat conditions may have contributed, while reports said the Jeep’s fan was on high, the air conditioning was not working, and no water or other liquids were found inside. The vehicle had plenty of gas and showed no signs of mechanical failure, which leaves the question of what physically happened to the couple still open.
Postmortem examinations were being scheduled, and those tests are expected to determine the exact medical cause of death for the Sheldons. Until then, the case rests between what is known and what is not: two longtime San Francisco patrons found dead in a car that never crashed, on a day when the heat may have done the damage instead.
