A sneaker wave pulled a mother and her young daughter into the ocean at Baker Beach on Thursday afternoon, sending both to the hospital in serious condition after a sudden burst of surf near the rocks.
The San Francisco Fire Department said the two were walking near the shoreline at about 3:15 p.m. when the wave swept them into the water. They were rescued before firefighters arrived and later taken to the hospital by paramedics.
The incident happened while the National Weather Service already had a beach hazards statement in effect for SAN FRANCISCO. That advisory warned of increased risks from sneaker waves and strong rip currents and was set to remain active through early Sunday morning, which made Thursday’s rescue part warning and part proof that the warning mattered.
Maria Flores saw the aftermath as responders worked on the woman. She said there were a lot of people around her, that she was placed on a stretcher, and that a CPR device was on her face. Flores also said she heard responders say the woman caught her breath, a small sign inside a larger emergency that had already turned serious.
Capt. Jonathan Baxter said Baker Beach is often less aggressive than Ocean Beach, but he said it still has inherent hazards. He said the danger was concentrated near the northeastern portion of the beach, toward the rocky area, where the shoreline can look calmer than it is. That is the part that makes the beach deceptive: the water can appear manageable until a sneaker wave runs farther up the sand than anyone expects.
Firefighters used the same incident to reinforce a simple warning. Sneaker waves can strike without warning, they said, and people should never turn their back to the ocean or climb onto the rocks, whether a beach hazards statement is posted or not. For the mother and daughter, the next known step was already underway: both were in serious condition at the hospital.
