Bang Si-hyuk and Lucian Grainge met employees at HYBE's Yongsan headquarters on the 16th for a 90-minute internal town hall that turned into a public affirmation of how the two men see the business they run. About 200 employees in the room and staff watching from overseas offices heard the heads of HYBE and Universal Music Group talk about music as the foundation of everything they do.
The timing matters because Grainge had come to Korea to meet with Chairman Bang, and the discussion was broad enough to frame where both companies think the market is headed. UMG is the world's largest music company and accounts for more than 30% of the global recorded music market, while HYBE is now the world's fourth-largest music company, so a conversation between their chairmen naturally drew attention inside the company.
Grainge told employees that no matter what responsibility anyone takes on, without music there is nothing. He also said his management philosophy is to work surrounded by good music and good people. Bang answered in kind, saying companies must address societal discomforts in line with the essence of their business and that the hard part is staying lonely and facing difficulties while still satisfying fans' emotions through music and giving them strength in their lives.
That language matched the deeper point of the meeting: HYBE and UMG are already tied together through record distribution and joint ventures, but Grainge said their talks are based on strategy, not transactions. Bang said he always discusses with Grainge how to advance the music industry, and Grainge replied that Chairman Bang has built a special and creative culture as an entrepreneur who thinks strategically rather than transactionally. In other words, the partnership is being presented as more than a set of deals, even though the deals already exist.
The live broadcast to Japan, the United States, Latin America, India and other regions gave the event a wider reach than a typical headquarters meeting. Bang closed by saying the company should stay true to its essence and become one that can show fans the reasons for living through music. What remains unclear is whether that shared philosophy will lead to any new move between HYBE and UMG, or whether the message was meant to signal unity before any concrete plan is announced.
