is bringing back the shopping frenzy on Wednesday, June 17, with a new striped mini canvas tote bag that will go on sale as soon as stores open. The limited-release bags, a first striped version of the mini canvas tote, will be sold in light green, pink, blue and tan.

The timing matters because the little bags have become one of the chain’s most sought-after items, and the new version arrives after the mini canvas tote was first announced in April. Trader Joe’s shoppers have learned that when these bags hit stores, they tend to disappear fast, and the resale market can push a $2.99 tote into the $20 range, into the hundreds, and in some cases above $1,000. That kind of markup has turned a basic canvas bag into a weekly talking point well beyond the checkout line.

For customers, the appeal is simple: the bag is small, colorful and limited. Trader Joe’s previously released the original mini canvas tote in blue, green, red and yellow, then brought it back in December last year. It also rolled out pastel versions in April last year for , released them again this March and debuted -themed mini totes in October. The company has built a pattern around scarce releases, and the striped version fits squarely into it.

said Trader Joe’s filed a lawsuit because some knockoff totes are already being sold online and customers could be misled about what they are buying. She said the company wants shoppers to get what they paid for. That fight has become part of the tote story even as the retailer prepares to sell another highly desirable bag.

Trader Joe’s filed the suit in May against two companies with overseas links operating in California, and a California court granted a temporary restraining order against both on June 8. A preliminary injunction hearing is now scheduled for June 26 at the . The overlap is hard to miss: one hand is putting out a new collectible, while the other is trying to stop a market built on copies.

That pressure has not slowed demand for the brand’s limited bags, which have become prized souvenirs in Japan and the Philippines and routinely sell out as soon as stores open. Trader Joe’s sells five types of limited-release bags, including a large canvas tote, a micro canvas tote, a large insulated tote and a mini insulated tote, and every one of them has drawn its own audience. The striped mini canvas tote may be the newest version, but the bigger story is how quickly a $2.99 bag can turn into a resale target before most shoppers even get to the register.
