Quinta Brunson is moving Betty Boop back toward a feature film, with Fifth Chance Productions partnering with Fleischer Studios to develop a new adaptation and Brunson attached to star in the title role. The project is still in development, but it is already set up around a character who has lived for generations without returning to a starring theatrical feature.
That is why Brunson's name matters here. She is not only taking the lead role; she is also helping steer a version of Betty that is meant to look at the character's origin and evolution through the eyes of her creator, Max Fleischer. The film is expected to explore the push and pull between artist and creation, and the creative and commercial pressures that built one of the world's first animated icons.
For Brunson, the attraction seems to be the character's strange balance of fame and obscurity. She has said Betty has had a quiet but undeniable effect on culture for nearly a century, while also remaining pleasantly niche. After Erin Wehrenberg and she met with Mark Fleischer and learned more about Max Fleischer's creation, Brunson said she realized there was a much deeper story to tell, one that could feel refreshing, subversive and timeless.
That friction is part of the appeal. Betty Boop is one of the most recognizable and enduring figures in entertainment history, yet her movie life has mostly lived through licensing, brand collaborations and the long afterlife of her image rather than a modern theatrical lead. She debuted in Fleischer Studios' Talkartoons series in the 1930s, became the first and only animated independent female movie superstar, and now is being positioned for her first starring motion picture appearance since that era.
Mark Fleischer said Brunson first came to him with the idea of making a movie about the relationship between Max Fleischer and Betty Boop, and he said her personality matches the character's love of life, intelligence, humor, sassiness and compassion. Head of Creative Affairs Erin Wehrenberg is overseeing the project for Fifth Chance Productions, but no production start or release date has been set. For now, the news is the deal itself: Betty Boop is coming back into feature-film development, and Brunson is the face attached to carry her there.
