Derrick Lewis is back on the UFC’s White House card after President Donald Trump asked why the heavyweight knockout artist was not on it. The move put Lewis on UFC’s Freedom 250, set for Sunday on the South Lawn, after what Dana White described as a presidential nudge in Miami.
The timing matters because the card is only days away, and Lewis went from being left out to being added after Trump raised the issue directly with White. Lewis, who holds the UFC record for most knockouts with 16, said he and Trump even shared a quick conversation after White passed along his phone.
White said Trump brought up Lewis in April during UFC planning in Miami, telling him, “Why is Derrick Lewis not on the White House card?” White said he stepped away, called Lewis and asked if he wanted the fight, and Lewis said yes immediately. White said Trump likes Lewis’ personality and the way he fights.
Lewis did not spell out what Trump told him, saying only, “It’s classified.” He did say he had been wanting to come in the White House “just to see how it is,” a line that fits the unusual setting as much as the fighter who now has a place on it.
That place was not always guaranteed. White said Lewis was initially omitted, even after Trump singled him out, and White then settled on Josh Hokit as the opponent after Hokit won in Miami. The White House card now carries Lewis’ name, but the story still leaves one thing hanging: why he was left off in the first place.
Trump has long been a regular around the sport, and the president was described as a noted fight fan since the promotion’s early days. Lewis had already fought in front of him once, when Trump watched him take on Blagoy Ivanov at UFC 244 at Madison Square Garden on Nov. 2, 2019. He also fought Waldo Cortes Acosta in a heavyweight bout at UFC 324 in Las Vegas on Jan. 24, 2026.
For now, the outcome is simple: a fighter known for finishing people in the cage is headed to one of the strangest venues the UFC has ever booked. The bigger question is whether the White House card will stay fixed long enough for Lewis to actually walk out on the South Lawn on Sunday.
