Four riders were safely rescued Thursday night after the Sky Screamer at Six Flags St. Louis stopped with them about 120 feet in the air. Metro West Fire Department said all four were down by around 8:30 p.m. Thursday evening, ending an active rescue that brought in the department and other crews.
The stoppage drew immediate attention because the riders were reported safe and not at risk of falling, even as the ride could not be brought down through the park’s normal procedure. Six Flags said a park representative was with the guests and that it was doing all it could to keep them comfortable while they were being unloaded safely.
The Sky Screamer is a swing ride, and the incident unfolded early Thursday evening as fire crews responded to the park. That response became necessary when the park’s own attempt to get the riders down did not work, leaving outside rescuers to take over the job.
By the time the rescue was complete, the immediate danger had passed, but the cause of the stoppage remained unanswered. Officials did not say what made the ride stop or whether the Sky Screamer returned to service after the four riders were brought down.
