was charged Monday with felony murder in the May 31 killing of , a 33-year-old registered nurse who was shot during an attempted robbery near 14th and Harrison streets in downtown Oakland.

The charging decision puts a new homicide case before the court in a downtown killing that drew attention because Solomon was on his way to his car when, prosecutors say, Daniels tried to rob him and opened fire. Solomon worked for and in San Leandro, and he was known online as Nurse Solomon.

For readers following the case now, Monday is the point at which the killing moved from police investigation to a formal murder charge. Daniels has also been held on allegations of dissuading a witness, pimping, shooting at an unoccupied vehicle and evading police, making the Solomon case part of a broader criminal docket that was already active before the homicide charge was filed.

Solomon’s death also carries a more personal weight. A fundraising page created in his memory said he leaves behind a daughter, and described the loss as leaving an unimaginable void. It said a daughter lost her father, parents lost their son and siblings lost their brother, while many others lost a trusted health educator, caregiver, mentor and friend.

Solomon had earned a Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree from and was born and raised in Ghana before immigrating to the United States. His professional work and the outpouring after his death helped turn a downtown shooting into something larger than a case number: it became a loss felt by coworkers, patients and family, while the city was left with another fatal robbery case in a busy core.

The record around Daniels adds another layer of unease. In 2018, he and an alleged accomplice were shot by after authorities said they rammed patrol vehicles during an arrest on suspicion of a series of auto burglaries. Now, with a murder charge added to the list of accusations already pending against him, the question for the next court date is not whether prosecutors will pursue the case, but what evidence they will use to link Daniels to Solomon’s killing.

Daniels has a plea hearing scheduled for June 30.
