Jose Carreras will headline a concert at The Gabba on December 5, the night he turns 80, in a booking the Queensland government is using to strengthen its push to make the state the country’s “events capital.”
The concert is being built around Carreras’ birthday celebration, but it also fits neatly into the Crisafulli government’s wider attempt to showcase Queensland before the 2032 Brisbane Olympics. That is why a one-night performance in Brisbane is carrying more weight than a simple anniversary show.
Carreras will not be on stage alone. The concert will feature duets with Robbie Williams, Natalie Imbruglia and Katherine Jenkins, while Ronan Keating, The Corrs and Ann Wilson are also on the bill. Ann Wilson is best known as part of 1970s hitmakers Heart, adding another familiar name to a lineup designed to draw attention well beyond classical audiences.
That mix is also part of the point. The event is being framed as a major entertainment draw, but the birthday tie-in gives it a more personal hook, with Carreras’ 80th falling on the same night he appears at The Gabba. For Queensland, the attraction is not only the artist list but the message that the state wants to be seen as a place that can land headline events on a global scale.
What remains unclear is the commercial side. No ticket details were stated, and there is no further event beyond the December 5 concert. For now, the date, the birthday and the government’s branding push are locked together, and Carreras is the name at the center of all three.
