Most Australians will get the King's Birthday public holiday on Monday, 8 June, but Queensland and Western Australia will not share the same long weekend. Residents in the ACT, New South Wales, the Northern Territory, South Australia, Tasmania and Victoria get the day off now, while the two larger states hold their holiday for later in the year.
The timing matters because the holiday lands on a Monday, turning it into a three-day break for millions of people across six states and territories. It also keeps the split calendar in focus for anyone checking when shops, workplaces and local services may close over the weekend.
The date is tied to King Charles III, who was born on 14 November, 1948, even though the public holiday is not observed on his actual birthday. In Australia, the monarch's birthday has long been marked at different times of year depending on the state or territory, and the holiday was renamed after Queen Elizabeth II died, while the dates themselves stayed in place.
Queensland will observe the King's Birthday on 5 October this year, after the state government moved the public holiday in 2015 to spread holidays more evenly through the year. Most of Western Australia marks it on 28 September, with the City of Karratha and town of Port Hedland set for 3 August because of local event timing. Western Australia has long kept the celebration later in the year to line up with the Perth Royal Show and to avoid crowding another June holiday.
That leaves a clear wrinkle in the national picture: while most of the country gets a Monday break, Queensland and Western Australia wait for their own dates. The variation is built into the calendar, not an exception, and it is why the Kings Birthday public holiday is one of the most unevenly observed dates on the Australian schedule.
The next checkpoint comes on 13 June, when this year's Trooping the Colour parade will be held. For now, the practical answer is simple: the long weekend starts Monday for most of Australia, but not for Queensland or most of Western Australia.
