Liverpool have appointed Andoni Iraola as head coach after sacking Arne Slot, ending the uncertainty around Anfield’s next direction within six days of making the change. Richard Hughes and Michael Edwards moved fast because the club wanted a new hand in place before the World Cup tears up the usual rhythm of a pre-season.
That is why James Hill is being searched now: Liverpool are not just changing managers, they are starting a new cycle with a coach known for a sharp, aggressive game and for improving players. Iraola, 44, arrives on a two-year deal after being courted by Milan, Bayer Leverkusen and Crystal Palace, and Liverpool believe he can bring a version of the attacking football once associated with Jürgen Klopp without the same long bedding-in period.
He has earned that reputation the hard way. Iraola improved Bournemouth in each of his three seasons on the south coast, and he survived a nine-game winless start to his Premier League career there, a spell that could have broken a less stubborn manager. At Bournemouth’s farewell, he joked after hearing a blunt assessment of himself: “Who the fuck is this guy?”
Slot’s exit was not an isolated decision. Supporters had turned against his football before the sack came, even though he had delivered Champions League qualification in difficult circumstances and, 13 months earlier, won the title in his debut season. The reaction around Mohamed Salah’s critical social media post, which drew more likes than messages wishing Slot well, underlined how far the mood had shifted by the end.
Liverpool now have to make the appointment work in a very short window. The World Cup will cut into Iraola’s first pre-season, and the club are already shaping the squad for him with two wingers and a new right-back among the priorities. Yan Diomande of Leipzig is a leading target, though RB Leipzig are reluctant to sell and Paris Saint-Germain are also watching him closely.
That leaves Iraola with little room to settle in slowly. Liverpool hired him because they think he can sharpen individuals as well as the overall style, but the first test is immediate: turn a squad that had drifted, make the new signings fit, and do it before the season arrives in compressed fashion.
