Andrew Rannells is out as the voice of William Clockwell in Invincible season 4, with Brandon Scott Jones stepping into the role earlier this year. Rannells, who played William across the show’s first three seasons, said he has not been given a clear explanation for the change.
That answer matters now because Invincible season 4 has already aired, and the recasting is only now being discussed publicly. For viewers who had come to associate William with Rannells’ performance, the switch was part of a broader reshuffling of guest voices that also included Zachary Quinto being replaced by Ross Marquand as Robot and Jonathan Groff being swapped out for Luke Macfarlane as Rick Sheridan.
Rannells told The Direct he was “not exactly sure why,” adding that there “was maybe a little restructuring” and that he was a guest star. He said there were “a lot of guest stars that didn’t end up coming back for the fourth season,” which places his exit inside a wider casting reset rather than a single, isolated change. His comments do not point to a falling-out or creative dispute. They point to a show that simply moved some of its supporting players aside.
Rannells also said he was “happy to be a part of the first three,” a line that sounds like a polite goodbye, but it leaves the key question unanswered: why him, and why now? The series has already been renewed for season 5, Aaron Paul is set to return, and there will be more side quests, but whether Rannells will rejoin the cast has not been announced. For now, William Clockwell belongs to Jones, and the reason Rannells was not called back remains unclear.
