Real Madrid have made Denzel Dumfries their top target at right-back and have already held talks with the Inter Milan defender as they move early to reshape their defence. The 30-year-old has a €20million release clause, and the Spanish club are now trying to work out whether they can finish the deal after Sunday’s presidential election.
The timing matters because Madrid are looking at a summer in which Dani Carvajal is set to leave at the end of June, which would leave Trent Alexander-Arnold as their only senior recognised right-back. Dumfries has become the clearest answer to that problem, with sources briefed on the deal saying personal terms are not expected to be an obstacle.
That is why the search around Dumfries has intensified now. Real Madrid are targeting defenders early in the window, and Jose Mourinho has pushed for reinforcements across the back line, asking for a backup right-back, a left-back, a dominant centre-back and a creative midfielder in discussions with the club. For the right side specifically, Madrid want a second-choice option available for around €30million, and Dumfries fits neatly below that figure.
The move is not without a political edge. One source said Madrid were planning to conclude the deal following Sunday’s vote if Florentino Perez is declared the winner, with Perez, 79, facing Enrique Riquelme in the June 7 election. Around 100,000 club members are eligible to vote, and that result may end up shaping whether Madrid can move quickly from talks to signatures.
Madrid had also looked at Tottenham Hotspur’s Pedro Porro and Sporting CP’s Ivan Fresneda, but there is no indication Tottenham are open to selling Porro for a fee that fits the club’s budget. That leaves Dumfries as the most direct path to covering a position that is about to become thin, and it makes the election more than a side note in the chase for a defender who is already on Madrid’s short list. If Perez wins, the expectation is that the club will try to close the deal on Sunday.
