The Giants will work out Braxton Berrios on Monday as they search for help in a receiver room that keeps getting thinner. Adam Schefter of reported that Berrios, JuJu Smith-Schuster and Odell Beckham Jr. are among the veterans slated for the session, with Anthony Miller also involved.
The timing matters because the Giants are trying to patch a group hit hard by injuries. Gunner Olszewski went down with a torn Achilles in practice last week, Malik Nabers is recovering from a torn ACL and Darius Slayton recently had core muscle surgery. That leaves the team evaluating whether any of the available veterans can help immediately, not just later in the season.
Berrios is drawing a look for reasons beyond name recognition. He played in four games for the Texans, so the Giants are not getting a player with a heavy recent workload, but he does have experience as a returner. That is part of the appeal after Olszewski, whose main role with the Giants was returning kicks and punts, was lost to injury.
The workout also gives the Giants a chance to compare different fits in one day. Smith-Schuster has a connection to offensive coordinator Matt Nagy from their time together in Kansas City over the last two seasons, while Miller adds another veteran option into the mix. The update on Miller came from Ian Rapoport of NFL Media at 8:23 a.m. ET.
What happens after Monday is the real question. The Giants can leave the workout with no signing at all, or they could decide one of the veterans is worth a roster move as they try to keep their offense and return game from slipping further.
