Bear Brown said on Friday that his brother Matthew Brown likely died by suicide, after witnesses reportedly saw him in or near a river late the night before. In a TikTok video, Bear said he could not confirm the report was 100 percent true, but said that was what he was hearing and that investigators were still searching the scene.
The 43-year-old reality TV figure's name moved fast across social media after Bear said the person spotted at the river was 99 percent likely to be Matthew. He said he was being told that Matt had taken his own life and that witnesses said they saw him floating down the river, a claim that immediately turned a family matter into a public question fans were trying to answer.
Bear said he had last seen Matt before leaving for Florida, when he ran into him in Walmart and talked with him for a few minutes. He said Matt later called and told him he had fallen off the wagon, and that was the last call he had with his brother. Bear also said Matt had been struggling with alcohol and drugs for a long time and had pulled away from the family.
That backdrop mattered because Bear said he never believed Matt was suicidal, even as he described a recent breakup and years of addiction. He asked people not to attack their mother, Ami Brown, saying she cared very much for Matt and had been through a lot for him. In a follow-up video, Bear said social media posts in Matt Brown's name were not authentic.
The hardest part of the story is still the one Bear could not close: investigators had been scouring the area, but no body had been found. That leaves his Friday remarks as a public, highly specific allegation, not a conclusion, and the next answer rests with the searchers on the riverbank, not with the family on TikTok.
