Microsoft has pushed the Fable reboot out of 2026 and into February 2027, moving one of Xbox's most anticipated releases beyond the holiday window. The company said the game will get “the dedicated moment it deserves” as it reshapes its launch plans through the end of the year.
The shift matters because Fable had been expected to arrive sometime in autumn 2026, and the new date removes it from Xbox's holiday lineup. Microsoft said it is planning game launches through the holidays in a way that works best for players, but it gave no sign that the delay was driven by anything other than timing. There is nothing to suggest Fable was pushed back for any reason other than to avoid Rockstar Games' release, even as Microsoft did not say whether the game needed more development time or was simply being moved around a crowded calendar.
The timing lands awkwardly for Xbox's 25th anniversary plans, where Fable had been one of the major titles expected to help carry the year. It also comes as publishers keep mapping out releases around some of the biggest dates on the calendar: Grand Theft Auto 6 is due on November 19 this year, Sony has set Marvel's Wolverine for September 15 and Activision has marked Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 for October 23. Microsoft is now stepping away from that late-year crush instead of trying to fight through it.
What had made Fable unusual before this announcement was how little Microsoft had nailed down. The reboot had no exact release date, only a broad 2026 window, and the new February 2027 slot is the first specific launch timing the company has given. That makes the move feel less like a routine scheduling note than a reset of expectations for one of the company’s biggest Xbox projects.
Microsoft said it will give players a major new look at Fable and its broader line-up at Xbox Games Showcase on June 7. For now, that is the next fixed point on the calendar, and it is where the company will have to show that the delay is buying something the wait will make visible.
