Seattle came home this weekend with a different kind of pulse. After sweeping the division-leading Athletics, the Mariners returned to host the Diamondbacks and moved into first place in the AL West, even though they were still not above.500.
That is why Diamondbacks vs Mariners is drawing attention now: Seattle arrives with a first-place label that does not yet match its record, and Arizona arrives with enough offense to make this series feel less lopsided than the standings might suggest. Ketel Marte has been carrying that case. Since May 9, he has 29 hits in 17 games and a 124 wRC+, while Corbin Carroll has added 22 hits over the same stretch.
The Diamondbacks still look like a team trying to squeeze the most out of a roster that has been pushed and patched. They entered the year after a surprise World Series appearance in 2023 and had invested heavily in the roster over the last few seasons, but injuries to Corbin Burnes and several of their best relievers have thinned the pitching staff. Even so, Arizona has stayed competitive because the core pieces were left intact after last summer’s sell-off, and the lineup has kept producing. Geraldo Perdomo has struggled in his follow-up to last year’s breakout, but Ryan Waldschmidt has taken over in center field after Alek Thomas was designated for assignment, Tommy Troy has filled in for the injured Lourdes Gurriel Jr., Nolan Arenado has posted his best offensive output since 2022 in his first season in Arizona and Ildemaro Vargas has been in a breakout year at 34.
That mix is why this series is more than a simple homecoming for Seattle. The Mariners are trying to turn a fast start into something steadier, while Arizona is waiting for injured arms to come back around midseason and relying on its bats to keep it in the race. Zac Gallen re-signed in February, but he also spent last year through the worst season of his career, leaving the Diamondbacks with another reason to lean hard on the lineup until the pitching picture clears. Which starters get the ball in the series has not been set out here, and that uncertainty keeps the matchup open even before the first pitch is thrown.
