A San Francisco YMCA has become the center of a locker room fight after a Monday report about a transgender woman in the women’s space prompted new rules on nudity and privacy. The Stonestown Family YMCA in San Francisco reportedly posted a flyer telling guests that “Nudity should be discreet, limited, and brief.”
The flyer also said, “Nudity is permitted only while actively showering. Members are expected to put clothing on or be covered during use of the space outside of showering.” It added, “Respect privacy and personal space. Please maintain appropriate distance from others, be mindful of personal space during times of undress, and demonstrate courtesy at all times.”
The dispute has centered on a transgender woman identified in a report as Sammy, whom the report said had been banned from exposing male genitalia in a women’s locker room at the San Francisco YMCA. The report said Sammy had frequented the Stonestown Family YMCA for two years, and that Sammy had not been seen since the new rules took effect.
Susan Pete told the Daily Mail that Sammy started going to the gym in 2024 and said the new rules seemed directed at people like Sammy. The report said Sammy would stand naked in front of the mirror and bend over while using a hairdryer, and would allegedly push back when confronted, calling people not just “intolerant” but also “drunk.”
The fallout has not stayed inside the building. Protesters demonstrated outside the Stonestown Family YMCA and another YMCA that Sammy was known to attend, while dozens of members reportedly signed a petition seeking to force Sammy into the designated gender-neutral space. That makes the issue bigger than one locker room argument: the gym is now trying to draw a line on privacy and exposure after members complained publicly and management answered with written rules.
The broader backdrop is a recurring fight over transgender access to sex-segregated spaces, with the source material also pointing to other controversies over locker rooms and sports. But the San Francisco case now has a specific answer: the YMCA has moved to limit nudity outside the shower, and Sammy has not been seen there since those rules went into effect.
