Fans at St James’ Park will soon be able to move seats as Newcastle United adds a new safe standing section to Level 7. The change follows a consultation that turned a large part of the upper tier into a standing area for more than 1,700 supporters.
Seating will be replaced by safe standing in Leazes West Corner Blocks L7C, L7D and L7E, creating space for 1,741 supporters on Level 7. Fans already in that area will be contacted to ask whether they want to stay or take the chance to move elsewhere in the ground, while supporters looking to join the new blocks can do so from Monday 1 June to Friday 5 June, subject to availability.
The decision lands after months of work with the Atmosphere Working Group and a fan survey that showed how strongly supporters feel about the mood inside the stadium. Nearly 6,000 fans responded, with 5,799 taking part in the survey, 57% of them season ticket holders and 38% members. Of those who replied, 73.9% said the atmosphere had declined over the past couple of seasons, and 69% backed the idea of an additional dedicated singing section.
That backing gives the club a clear mandate, but it also shows where the pressure now sits. Supporters said being with friends, family or fans with a similar mindset would help create a more passionate and connected atmosphere, and the new area is designed around that idea. The seat swaps are available throughout the stadium, subject to availability, which means the move is not limited to the new standing section.
Newcastle United’s consultation brought together voices from Wor Flags, the Fan Advisory Board, Newcastle United Supporter’s Trust, United with Pride, NUDSA, Newcastle United Supporter’s Club and senior club executives. For supporters who have spent months arguing that atmosphere matters as much as results, the next few days will decide who gets into the new section and who chooses to stay where they are before the seat move window closes.
