Scunthorpe United said Callum Roberts will leave the Iron in the coming days to sign for an EFL club, bringing down the curtain on a three-year spell that delivered promotion, goals and a stack of end-of-season awards.
The 29-year-old arrived from Aberdeen three years ago for an undisclosed fee and became central to Scunthorpe’s attack. In 2024-25, Roberts scored 20 league goals in 43 appearances, 41 of them starts, and helped the club win promotion back to the National League.
That season made him the club’s standout performer. Roberts won the majority of Scunthorpe’s end-of-season accolades and finished as its top goalscorer. He was also involved in the promotion semi-final, one of the decisive moments in the campaign that returned the Iron to the National League after a hard-fought season.
His form did not ease once the campaign ended. In the season just finished, Roberts made 48 appearances in all competitions, 45 as a starter, scored 21 goals and produced 32 goal contributions. Those numbers left him top of the club’s scoring charts and joint third for appearances across the season.
Scunthorpe said Roberts became the first player to retain the Ernie Storey Memorial Trophy, underlining how consistently he influenced matches over the course of the year. The club also said it had tabled an offer for him to stay for a fourth season, but Roberts turned down a number of offers after the season ended, some of them more lucrative than Scunthorpe’s own proposal.
That leaves the club losing a player it described as a standout attacking talent during his stay, but not on bitter terms. Scunthorpe said the door always remains open, and added that it looks forward to seeing Roberts flourishing back in the EFL. For a player who came through Newcastle United’s academy and rebuilt his reputation at Glanford Park, the move now offers a return to the level where he first made his name.
