Lourdes Gurriel Jr. left the Diamondbacks' game Friday night against the Colorado Rockies because of left hamstring tightness after making a sliding catch for the first out of the sixth inning.
The 32-year-old sprinted hard toward left center before sliding feet first to make the play, then grimaced and slowly stood up. After a brief conversation with manager Torey Lovullo and medical staff, he walked slowly off the field. Jorge Barrosa replaced Gurriel in the game, with Barrosa going to center and Ryan Waldschmidt moving to left.
Gurriel had two RBIs on Friday night before exiting and was batting.228 with one homer and 11 RBIs on the season. He had returned to the lineup on April 18 after missing roughly eight months with a torn ACL in his right knee, making the latest setback especially unwelcome for a player still trying to regain his rhythm.
The immediate concern is whether the hamstring issue will force another absence for a player the Diamondbacks only recently got back. Gurriel’s return had come after a long recovery, and Friday night’s exit added a fresh layer of uncertainty to a season already interrupted once.
