People were evacuated after the roof of a house collapsed in Hastings on Saturday evening, as emergency crews rushed to Ashburnham Road and closed part of the road while they dealt with the scene.
East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service was called at 19:38 to the roof collapse at a property on Ashburnham Road. The service said everyone inside the home was evacuated and accounted for. Police, ambulance crews and a gas team were also at the property, with two fire appliances, an aerial ladder platform and two special appliances sent to the scene.
Sussex Police said it received a call at around 7.40pm and officers assisted the fire service and council with temporary road closures. The road in Ashburnham Road was closed following the collapse, as firefighters worked to make the area safe.
Crews left the scene at 21:55 after finishing their checks. The incident was handled without any report of anyone remaining inside the property, but the collapse still brought a major emergency response to a residential street in Hastings on a Saturday night.
The speed of the response mattered because the collapse happened in a lived-in home, not an empty building, and the first priority was making sure nobody was trapped. By the time crews stood down, the immediate danger had passed, but the damage to the property and the disruption on Ashburnham Road were still plain for anyone passing by.
