Manchester City welcome Aston Villa on a day that could shape the Premier League’s final stretch, with both sides arriving in form and with history leaning heavily one way at the Etihad. City have won 19 of their last 20 Premier League home games against Villa and have taken each of the last 15 since a 2-0 loss in April 2007.
That kind of record matters because this is not just another meeting. City are unbeaten in their last 15 league matches, a run that began after a 2-0 loss to Manchester United in January, and they have won their final league match in eight of their nine seasons under Pep Guardiola. The only exception came at Brentford in 2022-23. They have also won their last six final league matches at home since a 3-2 loss to Norwich City in 2012-13.
Villa, though, are not arriving as passengers. They have won three of their last five Premier League games against City and are chasing a league double over Guardiola’s side for the first time since 1962-63. They beat Liverpool 4-2 last time out and are looking to win consecutive Premier League games for the first time since their eight-match run in November and December. In Ollie Watkins, they have a forward in form, with six goals and two assists in his last nine Premier League appearances after managing eight goals and one assist in his first 29 league outings this season.
City’s numbers still point to control, but they also hint at a vulnerability if Villa strike first. Guardiola’s team have conceded the opening goal in just six league games this season, yet they have only avoided defeat in two of those matches. Erling Haaland, meanwhile, has 27 goals already, which keeps the home side’s margin for error narrow and their threat constant.
The backdrop gives Villa more than a puncher’s chance. They have lost their final Premier League match of the season 16 times, more than any other side, and have won only one of their last 27 final league matches away from home. They have also been winless in 13 final away league matches since a 3-1 win at Chelsea in 2001-02. Even so, their 3-2 loss at City in the final game of 2021-22 shows they can make this fixture uncomfortable.
With lineups already announced and players warming up, the match is set up as a straight collision between City’s home record and Villa’s recent edge. City have the history, the streak and the scorer. Villa have the recent win, the momentum and a chance to do something they have not managed in more than six decades.
