Netflix has taken U.S. rights to Romain Gavras’ film Sacrifice, a Cannes market deal that gives the streamer control of a movie led by Chris Evans, Anya Taylor-Joy, Salma Hayek Pinault and Vincent Cassel. The film debuted at Toronto last year, and dates for its U.S. release have not yet been set, though late summer or fall is in play.
CAA Media Finance brokered the deal, according to the parties involved, as the film continues to move through the international market. John Malkovich, Yung Lean, Ambika Mod and Charli xcx also star, with Yung Lean making his film debut.
The project marks Gavras’ English-language debut and centers on Joan, played by Taylor-Joy, who is driven by a volcanic prophecy only she can hear. In the film’s synopsis, she hijacks a glamorous charity gala and takes three hostages — Mike Tyler, Bracken and Katie — while on a mission to save the world from a fiery reckoning.
Sacrifice is produced by Iconoclast and co-financed by Mid March Media and Film4, with additional backing from Gucci, Head Gear Films, the Onassis Culture and Athens Festival. Taylor-Joy, Evans and Will Arbery serve as executive producers, giving the film a mix of star power and industry backing that helped carry it from festival launch to the market.
The deal also lands after international buyers were named in separate territory sales, with Rocket Science cutting deals across multiple markets. That leaves the main question for U.S. viewers answered: Netflix has the rights, and the film is now headed toward a release window that could arrive as soon as late summer or fall.
