The Batman Part II has started filming in Liverpool, England, and director Matt Reeves used X to confirm several new names joining the sequel, including Scarlett Johansson, Sebastian Stan, Charles Dance, Brian Tyree Henry and Sebastian Koch.
Reeves did not say who any of them will play, but his message made clear that the production was finally moving after a long pause. He wrote, “Next exit, Gotham… Welcome,” and followed it with, “In a Gotham state of mind… Welcome.”
The new casting news lands on the same day set photos and videos circulated online showing work under way in Liverpool on Thursday 21 May. Fans picked out a stunt double for Robert Pattinson’s Bruce Wayne, along with a damaged, snow-covered Gotham City Police Department vehicle and a new logo for the film on an Alexa265 camera at the location.
The sequel has taken a slow road to the screen. The Batman was released in 2022, and The Batman Part II was first pushed back from October 2025 to October 2026 before being delayed again to Friday 1st October 2027.
That history matters because the film has become one of the clearest examples of how big studio projects can slip when development stretches out. The cast reveal gives the production fresh momentum, but the repeated delays mean every glimpse from the set now carries extra weight for fans who have been waiting since the first film.
Reeves has not given any role details for the newcomers, which leaves room for speculation but also keeps the focus on the fact that filming has finally begun. The cast list alone shows how ambitious the sequel remains, with Johansson, Stan, Dance, Henry and Koch joining what has already become one of the most closely watched projects in the superhero film calendar.
For now, the clearest answer is that The Batman Part II is no longer just a release-date story. It is in production, in Liverpool, and the long wait for the sequel has moved into its next phase.
