guard was listed as probable with a back injury Thursday, a day before Friday’s home contest against the , after missing Wednesday’s home game against the . Clark was ruled out less than an hour before tipoff Wednesday, then the Fever were later warned by the for failing to properly report the injury ahead of their 90-73 win.

The latest status suggests Clark is moving toward a return, but it does not erase how suddenly Wednesday unfolded. said she learned Clark was not playing at 5 p.m. ET, while the Fever announced her absence at 5:20 p.m. and the league’s official injury report was updated at 5:30 p.m. Fans were not allowed into Gainbridge Fieldhouse until 5:30 p.m., making the timing especially awkward for a team that had not placed Clark on the injury report earlier in the day.

White said Clark missed Tuesday’s practice while getting maintenance on her back, then woke up Wednesday with “some stiffness and some soreness.” Clark had also left the season-opener for treatment on her back, and White said the team chose caution instead of pushing her through it. The coach did not describe the issue as something the Fever were managing long term. “She’s healthy. We’re not managing anything. This is just a back issue that we want to make sure we gave the time to be ready,” White said.

That caution matters because Clark has already been asked to carry a heavy load. She played a season-low 24 minutes in Sunday’s home win over the after averaging 24.3 points, nine assists and five rebounds in her first four games this season. Clark said her back can get “out of line” quickly, and the Fever clearly do not want to gamble with a player who already missed most of last year, appearing in only 13 games because of various lower-body injuries.

The league’s reporting rules require teams to post a day-before injury report that names a participation status and identifies a specific injury, illness or other medical condition that could affect a player’s availability. Teams can submit reports as soon as midnight ET on game days, with updates every 15 minutes before tipoff. The Fever’s warning from the WNBA shows how seriously that process is taken, especially when one of the league’s biggest stars is involved.

For now, the question is less whether Clark has been cleared than whether the Fever can keep her on the floor long enough to matter. Thursday’s probable designation points in a better direction, but Indiana has already learned this week that with Clark, the gap between warmup and withdrawal can be very small.
