Rueben Chinyelu is returning to Florida for his senior season, giving the defending national champions another major frontcourt piece for 2026/27. Florida announced Chinyelu's decision on May 21, 2026, after the 6'10" center spent the spring testing the NBA draft waters.
Chinyelu's return matters because it keeps one of Florida's most productive and decorated players in place for another run. As a junior, he averaged 10.9 points and 11.2 rebounds in 24.5 minutes per game, then added the Naismith and NABC Defensive Player of the Year awards and a spot on the All-SEC second team. He also won a national championship as a sophomore in 2024/25, and his decision now makes Florida's roster even stronger as it likely heads into the fall as the top-ranked team in the nation.
The timing also helps Florida on a deadline day calendar that has been hanging over college programs across the country. NCAA early entrants testing the draft waters have until May 27 to withdraw their names and keep college eligibility, while the NBA withdrawal deadline for international prospects is June 13. Chinyelu, a Nigerian center, had already drawn attention at the draft combine in Chicago, where he scored 14 points and grabbed 15 rebounds in his second scrimmage. Last week, another report noted that he had performed well there before Florida's announcement made the choice official.
His return adds to a familiar core. Thomas Haugh and Alex Condon are also back as returning frontcourt prospects, giving Florida a group that has already proven it can win at the highest level. For the Gators, Chinyelu's decision does more than preserve depth. It keeps the backbone of a championship team intact and gives Florida a real chance to open the season with the target on its back.
