Drew Anderson is getting another turn in a major-league rotation. The 32-year-old will start for the Tigers on Wednesday against the Guardians, his first big-league start since Aug. 7, 2021.
Anderson has spent this season in a long-relief role, but Detroit is giving him the ball after a stretch that suggested he could handle more. In his last outing, he worked four innings and needed just 46 pitches, the kind of efficient line that can make a club think twice about keeping a pitcher in one lane.
The numbers are mixed, which is why this start matters. Anderson has a 4.67 ERA in 27 innings this season, along with 31 strikeouts and 12 walks. That 31:12 strikeout-to-walk ratio shows enough command to keep him in the conversation, even if the results have not been clean enough to lock down a permanent role.
The Tigers are also not treating Wednesday as a one-off. Anderson could earn additional turns through the rotation if he performs well, giving Detroit a possible short-term answer while it waits on Troy Melton. Melton is on the 60-day injured list and could be ready to return the next time the Tigers need a fifth starter.
That is the tension in Anderson’s assignment. He is getting a chance that has been more than three years in the making, but the opportunity may also be temporary, shaped as much by health as by performance. If Anderson throws the ball well Wednesday, he may buy himself more than one start. If he does not, Detroit has another path waiting.
