Sandy Springs police shut down Morgan Falls Overlook Park on Tuesday after responding to reports of a suspicious man in military-style gear, a search that ended with the man taken into custody. Police and SWAT closed the entrance road to the park, at 200 Morgan Falls Road, after a caller reported possible gunshots in the area.
Officers said the man went into the woods after an alleged dispute with another person, then another 911 caller reported hearing what may have been gunfire. No injuries were reported. Authorities have not publicly identified the suspect or released additional details.
The response rippled beyond the park. Ison Elementary School went into a soft lockdown during the search, with exterior and classroom doors locked and outdoor activities moved inside. The school hosted Fulton County Voting Precincts SS19A and SS22, and voting there was suspended just before noon before being lifted around 4 p.m.
The disruption came as Fulton County’s Department of Registration & Elections sought a court order to extend voting hours past 7 p.m. FBI Atlanta said it was assisting with the police investigation. For voters and families in Sandy Springs, the day ended with the park closed, the suspect in custody and questions still unanswered about what led to the reports that brought armed officers, SWAT teams and election workers into the same stretch of the city.
