Five Italian divers died while exploring a deep underwater cave off the Maldives, authorities said, after the group failed to surface by midday Thursday in rough weather near Vaavu Atoll. The victims were , her 20-year-old daughter , marine biologist , researcher and diving instructor .

Gianluca Benedetti was found dead near the cave entrance shortly after the group disappeared, while authorities believe the bodies of the four remaining divers are trapped deep inside a cave system about 160 feet underwater near Alimathaa in Vaavu Atoll. Italy's Foreign Ministry said the group apparently died while attempting to explore caves at a depth of 50 meters, or 164 feet.

The death of Montefalcone, 52, has drawn particular attention in Italy because she was an associate ecology professor at the and was diving alongside her daughter. Maldivian presidential spokesperson Mohamed Hussain Shareef said the cave was exceptionally dangerous and that divers even with the best equipment do not try to approach it. The site lies near Alimathaa in the central Maldives, and the cause of the deaths remains under investigation. The warning underscores the force of the location itself: a dive that drew an experienced team into water so deep that, by the time rescuers were alerted, the search had become a recovery effort.

For the families, the unanswered question is not whether the cave was dangerous but what happened in the moments before the divers vanished. Carlo Sommacal said, “Something must have happened,” and the investigation will now have to determine whether weather, depth or another factor turned a planned exploration into a fatal .
