The Arizona Diamondbacks and Colorado Rockies were forced to wait out rain and looming thunderstorms Sunday before their series finale at Coors Field in Denver. The game, originally set for a 1:10 p.m. first pitch in Denver and 12:10 p.m. in Arizona, was placed in a delay as the weather settled over the area.
The Rockies later announced on X that the game was scheduled to begin at 2:55 p.m. Denver time, or 1:55 p.m. Arizona time. Michael Soroka was the Diamondbacks’ scheduled starter, and he was seen in the dugout before the expected first pitch as the teams tried to get the finale underway.
The delay came with the Diamondbacks still trying to lock down a series win. Arizona opened the set with a 9-1 victory behind Merrill Kelly’s first career complete game, then dropped the second game 4-2 after an especially poor offensive performance. Sunday’s finale offered one more chance to turn a split into a win, but the weather made the start anything but certain.
Rain and thunderstorm-filled conditions were expected to come and go for much of the afternoon, raising the possibility of a stop-and-start game if play began sooner rather than later. That left both clubs waiting on the kind of decision that can change the rhythm of a day before a pitch is even thrown.
For Arizona, the delay added another layer to a series that had already swung sharply from one end to the other. The Diamondbacks had the most dominant performance of the weekend in the opener, then looked flat at the plate in game two. If Sunday’s finale eventually gets in, the result will decide whether they leave Denver with a needed series win or settle for a split.
