A shelter-in-place order in Northeast Austin was lifted Friday evening after a SWAT response ended with a woman in custody and no injuries reported.
Austin police said the call came in around 3:56 p.m. in the 6900 block of Blessing Avenue, where officers responded to reports involving a woman threatening herself. Police set up a perimeter and brought in SWAT officers and hostage negotiators to help resolve the situation safely. At 5:03 p.m., the Austin Police Department told nearby residents to shelter in place while negotiations continued at the scene. About 20 minutes later, around 5:23 p.m., police said the order had been lifted after the woman surrendered peacefully and was taken into custody.
Officials said the woman had barricaded herself out in the open, but there was never a threat to the public. Police said the incident ended safely, and authorities have not released additional details about the woman involved. The response unfolded in a Northeast Austin neighborhood, where the shelter-in-place order was the clearest sign that officers were working to contain the scene while trying to avoid harm to anyone nearby.
The key fact is that the emergency passed without injuries, and police say the public was never in danger. What remains unanswered is why the woman was in distress and what led officers to that block Friday afternoon, details authorities have not yet disclosed.
