have accepted that will be sold in this transfer window, with monitoring the 21-year-old Portuguese midfielder after his rapid rise at the club. The sale would give West Ham fresh room to move in next season’s market, turning a player bought for 38 million pounds at the start of the season into a key source of funding.

Fernandes has delivered five goals and four assists in 40 matches this season, including two decisive assists in wins over Tottenham and Burnley. Those numbers have changed his status inside the club almost as quickly as he arrived, and he is now West Ham’s most valuable asset less than a year after leaving Southampton.

The path to this point has been unusually fast. Fernandes joined Southampton from in 2024 for 15 million pounds after making five first-team appearances for the Lisbon club, which kept a 15% sell-on clause in any future deal. In the 2024/25 season, he was voted Southampton’s player of the season by supporters after scoring four goals and providing two assists in 36 games. West Ham then paid 38 million pounds for him at the start of the current season.

But his first months in London did not begin with a guaranteed central role. preferred Lucas Paquetá as the attacking reference in midfield when Fernandes arrived, limiting the Portuguese midfielder’s opportunities. Paquetá was later sold to Flamengo in January for 41.25 million euros, and Fernandes took over that role. In January, Fernandes said the coach had given him confidence to play freely and described himself as a better player than before.

That confidence has now carried him into the national team picture. Roberto Martínez called Fernandes up in March, and he made his senior Portugal debut against the United States in a friendly. It was another sign that his form had moved beyond club optimism and into wider recognition.

West Ham’s thinking is straightforward: the club believes Fernandes can be sold now and that the money can help finance next season’s signings. The tension is just as clear. A player signed for a major fee, quickly trusted by supporters, and already good enough to break into Portugal’s senior squad is also the player the club is prepared to cash in on before he has spent even one full season in its shirt.

once said West Ham had lost a very valuable young player with the qualities to become a top performer, adding that the club wanted to keep him but had to make choices. West Ham have now made theirs. Fernandes may not stay long enough to become the face of the project, but he has already become the name that will shape the next one.
