Canelo Alvarez will return to the ring on September 12 in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, to face unbeaten Christian Mbilli for the WBC super-middleweight championship. It will be Alvarez’s first fight since his loss to Terence Crawford and his first shot at the 168lb world title since that defeat in Las Vegas last year.
Alvarez, who had been a dominant undisputed super-middleweight champion before Crawford beat him, said his motivation has not changed. “After so many years in this sport, my motivation is still the same: to challenge myself, represent Mexico, and continue building my legacy,” he said. He added that Mbilli is unbeaten and “a great fighter,” but said his own focus remains on preparation, performance and “giving the fans another great night of boxing.”
He also framed the bout as a fresh start after more than a year away from the sport. “On September 12 in Riyadh, we begin a new chapter with the same discipline, ambition, and vision that has carried me throughout my career,” Alvarez said. The matchup sends him straight back into world title competition, with little room for a tune-up after the only defeat of his professional peak.
Mbilli arrives with momentum of his own. The undefeated challenger said his last outing was “the fight of the year,” and predicted the meeting with Alvarez will be “the fight of the decade.” He went further, saying that when it is over “the world will witness a historic victory” for him. Mbilli’s rise through the ranks and claim to the WBC world championship came after Crawford retired, giving him a path to the belt Alvarez now wants back.
The contrast in styles is part of what makes the fight attractive to observers. Todd duBoef said the pairing works because Canelo needs an opponent who comes forward. “I think stylistically for both guys, it's a good fight. Canelo needs [Mbilli's style] too. He needs a guy that's going to come to him - that's where he really excels,” duBoef said. He called it “an excellent stylistic fight” and said the styles “come together.”
The timing matters because Alvarez is trying to reassert himself immediately after a setback that ended his run as the division’s standard-bearer. For Mbilli, the night offers the biggest stage of his career and a chance to turn a shot at the WBC 168lb world title into a breakthrough that would change the division again.
