Great Britain’s opening game at the 2026 Ice Hockey World Championship ended in a 5-2 defeat to Austria on Saturday, with all seven goals coming in the first two periods in Switzerland.
Austria struck first and fast, moving 3-0 ahead early in the opening period before David Clements and Liam Kirk pulled Great Britain back to 3-2 by the end of the first. Peter Schneider scored twice for Austria, and the Austrians stretched the lead to 5-2 before the second period was done.
For Great Britain, it was the first of seven group games and a harsh introduction to Group A. Five players made their full Great Britain debuts on Saturday, adding to the sense that this was a side still settling into the tournament. Mat Robson kept the score from widening further with two big late saves on the penalty kill, but the damage had already been done.
The result came a day after Switzerland beat the USA 3-1 and Finland beat Germany 3-1 in their opening games, setting a brisk pace to the tournament in Switzerland. In Group B, the Czech Republic beat Denmark 4-1 and Canada beat Sweden 5-3 on Saturday.
The pattern is clear enough for Great Britain now: the group leaves no room for slow starts, and Austria punished every lapse before the game could settle. That left Britain chasing from the moment the puck dropped, and it is the kind of opening that turns the rest of the group stage into a recovery mission.
