Israel is moving to equip its F-35I Adir fighter with external fuel tanks in a deal designed to stretch the aircraft’s reach on long-range strike missions. The Israeli Ministry of Defense signed a contract today with Cyclone, a wholly owned subsidiary of Elbit Systems, to develop and integrate the extended-range capability.
Elbit said the contract is worth more than $34 million. The tanks will be developed and integrated by Cyclone, which will adapt an existing design originally created for the F-16. The company said the new capability is expected to extend the aircraft’s operational range, reduce reliance on aerial refueling and give the Israeli Air Force more flexibility across long missions.
The move comes after the F-35I fleet saw extensive action striking targets in Iran this year and last, a pace of operations that raised questions about whether Israel could keep enough refueling support in place. That pressure is now showing up in hardware. By adding fuel tanks, Israel is trying to make the jet more self-sufficient over long distances, especially for missions that require more time over target or a longer route to get there.
The choice is also a compromise. Any external tank will weaken the F-35I’s low-observable features, and that matters on the kinds of missions the aircraft is built to fly. If the upgrade uses drop tanks, they are likely to be jettisonable, possibly along with their pylons, so the jet can shed the extra weight before it penetrates a hostile air defense system on an especially high-risk mission. That would preserve some of the stealth advantage, but only after the aircraft has already carried the burden of the extra fuel.
Israel already has experience operating F-15s and F-16s with conformal tanks, but the F-35I is a different case because of its stealth design. The new arrangement suggests the air force wants more range without giving up the option of flying deep into defended airspace, even if the added fuel comes with a penalty. For now, the headline is simple: Israel wants its most advanced fighter to go farther, and it is willing to trade some stealth to get there.
