Queen Margrethe was admitted to a Copenhagen hospital on Thursday for angina, and the Danish royal family said she will remain there over the weekend for observation and further examinations. A spokesperson said the former monarch is tired but in good spirits.
The hospital stay comes more than two years after Margrethe abdicated in favor of her son, King Frederik, ending a reign that made her the first Danish monarch in almost 900 years to step down voluntarily. Her wife, Queen Mary, took up the formal title of queen after the change.
Margrethe’s health has been central to the public record of her final years on the throne. In her New Year’s Eve 2023 abdication announcement, she pointed to her health needs, and said in February that year that she had undergone extensive back surgery. She told Danes then that the operation had led her to think about whether it was time to hand responsibility to the next generation, and that she had decided it was.
After abdication, Margrethe remained publicly active, though with a curtailed schedule, and the palace has previously said she had other health issues. She was also hospitalized last year, although the specific cause was not disclosed. The latest admission adds another medical concern for a royal figure who has continued to carry the honorific and styling of Her Majesty since stepping aside.
For Frederik’s court, the immediate question is not succession, but how long the former queen will remain under medical supervision and whether the weekend checks bring a quick release or a longer stay.
