Rudy Gobert was assessed a flagrant 1 foul on Victor Wembanyama in Game 5 after officials reviewed a hard closeout that nearly sent the San Antonio Spurs star into a serious ankle injury. The Minnesota Timberwolves center stayed in the game because the ruling was upgraded to a flagrant 1, not a flagrant 2.
The play came early in the first quarter Tuesday after Wembanyama, 22, stepped back for a three-point shot over Gobert. The big man had his feet underneath Wembanyama on the landing, and officials changed the original call after further review. Wembanyama then made 2 out of 3 free throws.
The foul landed in the middle of a series that had been tied 2-2 through four games, turning Game 5 into the sort of night that can swing a playoff matchup. The winner would move ahead 3-2 and take control of a physical matchup in which Minnesota has already had to deal with Wembanyama’s length, scoring and timing on both ends.
The Spurs star was also part of the confrontation in Game 4, when he was ejected after elbowing Naz Reid in the throat. That set the tone for a tense stretch between the teams, and it made every possession in Game 5 feel one hard foul away from changing the series mood again.
For Minnesota, the immediate concern was keeping Gobert on the floor and avoiding a more severe penalty that could have sent him to the bench. For San Antonio, the concern was simpler: protecting Wembanyama, who had already taken a hit in the previous game and then absorbed another dangerous landing sequence on Tuesday.
Game 6 was scheduled for Friday, May 15, in Minnesota, with the series still balanced and both teams carrying a fresh reminder of how thin the line is between playoff intensity and a play that goes too far.
