Charlotte FC will host New York City FC for the first time since their Best-of-3 series matchup in the 2025 MLS Cup Playoffs, a rematch that arrives with a different shape but the same edge. Charlotte beat New York City 2-1 at Citi Field last month, and now the teams meet again with the home side trying to keep momentum while playing without captain Ashley Westwood.
Westwood’s absence matters. The midfielder picked up his fifth yellow card of the 2026 campaign against FC Cincinnati and will miss the matchup through suspension, leaving Charlotte without one of its most established voices in the middle of the field. That came after Dean Smith said the team lacked energy and tempo in the first half against Cincinnati, a sharp assessment at a point in the season when Charlotte is trying to steady itself after mixed results in April and the back half of the month.
There are signs the attack is starting to tilt in the right direction. Pep Biel has contributed a goal or assist in four of his last five outings, while Djibril Diani has started Charlotte’s last three matches in all competitions and recorded his first assist of the season against Cincinnati. Brandt Bronico has also been a regular presence, appearing in 10 regular season matches for Charlotte this season, giving Smith options even as the captain sits out.
The roster picture has changed around the edges as well. Aron John recently signed a Homegrown contract with Charlotte FC, another reminder that the club is still trying to balance short-term results with longer-term depth. That matters now because Charlotte hosts three more matches in the month of May, making the coming stretch a chance to turn a promising run into something more durable.
The tension in this matchup is straightforward: Charlotte has already shown it can beat New York City, but it must now do it again without Westwood and with the burden of proving that the better moments from its last two outings are a real turn rather than a brief lift. Smith has enough form in the attack to be encouraged, but the suspension and the need for a cleaner first half leave little margin for another slow start. For Charlotte, this is less about proving a point from last November than about showing that the lessons from FC Cincinnati have actually stuck.
